games for profit

Concentrating on fun and
games, the new Leominster
Education Foundation is
rolling out a number of new
endeavors to raise money for
the city's schools.
The foundation is hosting a
golf tournament at Oak Hill
Country Club this summer,
and this fall will roll out
"Leominsteropoly," a twist
on the traditional
"Monopoly" that will use
local landmarks as
properties.
But first, the foundation
will pack the Entertainment
Cinemas this weekend with
screenings of "Shrek the
Third." Over 900 tickets
have already been sold for
the Saturday and Sunday
showings. The weekend
includes the raffling off of
a Shrek basket given by
DreamWorks, the producer of
the film.
The Leominster Education
Foundation, created this
spring, is working to raise
money to purchase two mobile
computer labs for Leominster
High School, and at least
one mobile lab for each
middle school.
Each lab cart will hold 12
to 14 computers, with
wireless Internet
connection, a printer,
projector, and cameras. The
carts will be designed to be
flexible, allowing one
teacher to use the system,
or a number of teachers to
use the computers at the
same time.
"Technology is the focus of
why we're raising the
money," said Wendy
VanVoorhis, who is
organizing the
Leominsteropoly effort. "We
want to raise money for the
mobile labs."
Foundation members are
currently soliciting local
businesses, and asking them
to purchase properties on
the Leominsteropoly board.
The foundation is also
selling "patron ads" that
will allow anyone in the
city to list their name or
business in the center of
the board.
The game will be available
at the Johnny Appleseed
Festival in September, but
preorders are available by
contacting VanVoorhis. Spots
on the board cost $350 to
$450. The games will be sold
for $25.
The Leominster Education
Foundation Golf Tournament
will be held on July 9, and
the scramble tournament will
include a raffle, silent and
live auction, lunch, dinner,
and a chance to win a new
Toyota Tacoma in the
hole-in-one contest.
"A golf tournament is a fun
way to try and raise some
money. I think they're very
popular," said Ernie
Muserallo, one of the
co-chairmen of the
tournament. "It's fun for
the golfers and in a lot of
cases fun for the sponsors."
